    What is health insurance?

    What is health insurance?

Health insurance, also called health insurance, helps patients cover the high costs of medical treatment. It is a contract between a person and the insurance company. The latter offers a plan that the person buys, and the company agrees to cover part of the expenses.

In many cases, health insurance can be obtained through the employer. Most of the time, the employer pays part of that insurance. They are usually managed care plans. In these, health professionals or medical centers are hired to serve members.   There is also the possibility that, by meeting certain requirements, you can have government insurance.

Types of health insurance that exist

If you are thinking of purchasing a health insurance service, you must first know which type is best for you. There are different types or modalities of health insurance . These vary in the way they provide their services, such as their coverage of expenses. The types of health insurance are as follows:

1-      Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO). They offer a local network of doctors, hospitals and other professionals and health centers. These plans also require that you choose a network primary care provider. Costs for an HMO plan, copays, and coinsurance are usually lower than other types, as long as you stay in-network.

2-      Exclusive supplier organizations (EPO). It offers a network of participating providers from which to choose. However, they do not offer out-of-network care coverage, except in emergencies. Depending on the plan, you may or may not have to choose a primary care provider.

3-      Preferred Provider Organizations (POP). They offer a wide network of participating providers so you can access more hospitals and professionals to choose from. You can also choose out-of-network providers but you will pay more out-of-pocket costs. A primary care provider is not required, and you can see specialists without referrals.

There is no doubt that having health insurance is more than beneficial for everyone. Whether you are included in the plan of a family member or spouse, or you are the main benefactor. You can rest easy knowing that, at the moment of a health problem, you can have attention and care without the high costs that these imply.
